Challenge: To advise Ethias about its sustainable development – to calculate and reduce its CO₂-footprint

Partnership: Ethias is a Belgian insurance broker who highly valuates ‘sustainability’. In 2007, the company partnered with CO2logic to calculate and reduce its carbon footprint using the “Bilan Carbone®” method, in order to eventually become CO₂-neutral. To achieve this, 5 sites with over 1800 employees across Belgium were audited by CO2logic while looking at both direct emissions (scope 1 &2) as well as indirect emissions (scope 3) to map the entire climate impact.

Results: In 2014, CO2logic measured how much the footprint has been reduced. Having applied several quick wins, Ethias was able to reduce emissions with 41% and decrease the recurring energy costs by €150,000 a year. Having included indirect emissions in the calculation, Ethias also presents itself as a multiplier of carbon reduction. For example, by providing an advantageous insurance (-30%) for electric cars, it lowers the accessibility to climate friendly vehicles.
